Over the years, numerous legendary duos have left mics scorched along their path to cementing their place in Hip-Hop’s pantheon, using a unique approach and steely lyrical delivery. From the standard bearers of Eric B. & Rakim to the groundbreaking duo of Outkast to recent standouts Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, each has forged their own path while incrementally changing the game in their own way. But few duos have walked a path similar to that of “Joe” Urso and Andrew “Box” Boxman, the driven and charismatic duo known for their unique approach to Hip-Hop best described as youthful, exuberant, in-your-face and unabashed yet simultaneously refined and smooth.
Hailing from suburban Howell, New Jersey along the famous “Jersey Shore,” Joe-N-Box’s musical beginnings began similarly to those of most proud 90’s babies. It was taught by an older mentor, in Joe-N-Box’s case, Box’s older brother Justin who introduced the young duo to freestyling during their high school days. But what began as a fun hobby quickly became an obsession following Justin’s untimely death from a heroin overdose in 2011.
With a renewed dedication to music, Joe-N-Box set out to sharpen their swords while studying their craft to perfection. The influences of Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Jay Z and the aforementioned Outkast mixed with their penchant for lush melodies and uplifting hooks, drawn from the soft rock songs heard wafting from Jersey Shore bars on Summer evenings. Hours upon hours of freestyling then turned into even more hours in the recording studio and resulted in Joe-N-Box’s first mixtape, April 2014’s “Never Grow Up” which was noted for its “smart lyricism, timely delivery and solid beats” by The Source Magazine. The success of “Never Grow Up” led to Joe-N-Box sharing a stage with Huey Mack and Yonas, in their hometown of Howell, New Jersey, in front of hundreds on the sold out “Things Change Tour.”
With their destination in full scope and under the guidance of The High End Agency, a New York City based creative development firm, Joe-N-Box has released their six-track, debut Ep, “The Cheap Seats” featuring celebrated lyricist Maffew Ragazino and production by Sean “Goldenchild” Mangan. Although the journey is just beginning for this inseparable duo, they’re well on their way.
